Website as a service vs a one-off build: which costs less?

It is a question every business owner asks: is a monthly website plan actually cheaper than paying for a website once? The honest answer depends on how long you keep the site and what you would otherwise pay for the things around it.

What a one-off build usually covers

A one-off project fee normally covers design and development. After launch you will typically also need:

• Hosting and domain renewals
• Software updates, security patches and backups
• Someone to make changes when your business changes
• Ongoing SEO and speed checks

These are often bought from separate suppliers, so the real cost is the build plus every recurring item.

What a monthly plan covers

With website as a service, those items are bundled into one monthly fee. You pay less up front and the provider is responsible for keeping everything working.

Do the sums over three years

Take the plan price and multiply it by the months you expect to keep the site:

• Starter at £49 a month: £49 × 36 = £1,764
• Pulse at £99 a month: £99 × 36 = £3,564
• Commerce at £149 a month: £149 × 36 = £5,364

Now get written quotes for a one-off build and add the recurring costs for the same 36 months: hosting, maintenance, security, updates and the time you spend on changes. Compare the two totals, not just the first invoice.

Where a one-off build can win

If you have technical skills in-house, need highly custom functionality, or plan to keep the same site untouched for many years, paying once can work out cheaper.

Where a monthly plan can win

Lower cash outlay at the start, a predictable monthly cost, one team to contact, and someone else responsible for updates and security. For many small businesses, that predictability is worth more than the theoretical saving.

Whichever route you choose, make sure you know what happens if you stop paying, and who owns your domain and content.
